The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is looking to fill the position of Financial Manager/Accountant.

 

The Financial Manager/Accountant is responsible for ensuring accountability for all funds of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild (SWG) and the SWG Foundation Inc (SWGF). This part-time position provides essential support to this provincial non-profit arts organization.

 

This part-time position works closely with a team of creative professionals to produce engaging and diverse programming and services for over 650 provincial and national members.

 

Applicants should be a graduate of a recognized accounting program and/or have extensive experience in general accounting (non-profit preferred). Experience with Sage 50 Accounting is an asset. The Regina-based position is part-time (approximately 22.5 hours per week) with the ability to work flexible hours for SWG events. There are comprehensive benefits after three-months. General Information

 

Purpose

 

The Financial Manager for the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild (SWG) is responsible for ensuring accountability for all funds of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild (SWG) and the SWG Foundation Inc (SWGF). This part-time position provides essential support to this provincial non-profit arts organization, which offers numerous programs and services for writers throughout Saskatchewan.

 

General Description

 

The Financial Manager is responsible for maintaining the financial aspects of the organization, including payables, receivables, the general ledger and trust accounts. The Financial Manager maintains and develops accurate financial records and effective systems to support the SWG and the SWGF’s financial accountability. The Financial Manager reports directly to the Executive Director. The Executive Director reviews his/her performance.

 

Key proficiencies:

 

  • Experience with financial data management through Sage 50 Accounting system
  • Budget, payroll, revenue, expenses and other invoices monitoring
  • Extensive knowledge in audit preparation
  • A substantial understanding of non-profit reporting and accounting procedures
  • Familiarity in regulations and reporting for non-profits

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Administrative

 

  • Oversees and maintains current and accurate records of SWG’s and SWGF’s financial transactions, including all payables, revenues, and personnel obligations
  • Manages all financial transactions, prepares and processes payments
  • Prepares monthly reconciliations for all accounts
  • Maintains effective internal controls and follows
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and forecasts expenditures.

 

Reporting

 

  • Prepares regularly scheduled financial statements for review by the Executive Director, Audit Committee, and the SWG Board
  • Prepares the annual financial statement and ensures that all supporting documentation is prepared and available for the annual audit
  • Is responsible for filings of the Corporation Returns, GST reporting and reports under the Charities Act

 

Programming and Services

 

  • Assists staff in the preparation of grant applications and follow-up reports. Prepares the financial components for grant applications as required.
  • Ensures all SWG financial activities are compliant with instituted policies and procedures and with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Provides advice and guidance to the Executive Director as required.

 

Leadership

 

  • Participates and contributes to strategic and operational decisions of the SWG
  • Supports a strong leadership team
  • Participates and supports the development of a strong staff team within the SWG and may include supervision
