The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is pleased to announce that our 2020 Caroline Heath Memorial Lecture will be presented by Trevor Cole at our annual Fall Conference Inventing the Future.  This lecture, and his writing workshop, will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Over a thirty-five year career, Trevor Cole has won international acclaim as an author and journalist. His four novels have twice been shortlisted for the Governor Generals Award for Fiction, twice long-listed for the International Dublin Literary Award and short-listed for the Writer’s Trust Fiction Prize. His third novel, Practical Jean, won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, while his journalism has garnered nine National Magazine Awards, including three gold medals. Trevor's latest book, The Whisky King, won the Arthur Ellis Award for Canada's best nonfiction crime book.

The Writer’s Ego — A Survival Story

For the 2020 Caroline Heath Memorial Lecture, Trevor Cole will explore the life of a Canadian writer’s ego, which exists in a harsh climate, subsisting on a meagre diet gathered from dwindling resources. Drawing mostly on his own ego’s experience over his decades-long career as a professional sentence- and paragraph-builder, Cole will follow the development of the writer’s ego from its lithe and muscular youth through its diminished middle years. As he looks ahead to the ego’s frail and uncertain future, he attempts to grapple with the Canadian writer’s place in the wider world.

The Character Equation - A Fiction Writing Workshop

This 90-minute workshop may change the way you think about developing characters for your novel or short story. More than being elements dropped into your fictional world, your characters — and especially your main characters — actively help shape that world. Trevor Cole will show how developing a sound fictional plot, finding the perfect tone, and crafting effective description and dialogue, are all tied to an intimate understanding of the characters you create.

More information about these events, including registration links, will be available in September. Stay tuned!
