September 18, 2024 Readings by
Betty McGillivray
Jaclyn Morken
Dimple Mehta
Host: Ashleigh Mattern
Betty McGillivray grew up in Mossbank, SK. After teaching in the small Saskatchewan towns of Piapot, Golden Prairie, and Bienfait, she finished her career at Westview School in Estevan. Betty’s husband, Lyle, and her sons, Matthew and Curtis are the joy of her life. She tries to see the humorous side of life and is happy to tell people about her adventures. Her book, Fun Is Where You Make It, is full of these stories. Although she is forced to grow older, Betty refuses to grow up and she encourages others to do the same.
Jaclyn Morken is a writer and editor from Saskatoon. She is a graduate of the MFA in Writing program at the University of Saskatchewan, during which she discovered the joys of a writing community, learned to use ellipses more sparingly, and finally completed her first novel. Her writing has since appeared in numerous publications—including antilang., Frictionlit.org, and BlackFlash Magazine—and was read at the 20/21 Vision: Speculating in Literature and Film in Canada conference. She has been a volunteer editor with Brink Literacy Project and F(r)iction Magazine since 2019 and currently works as Director of Marketing for Thistledown Press.
Ananta (Dimple Mehta) hails from India and calls Canada home now. Writing, for her, was an escape into a different world, as a very shy teenager. Soon after joining law school, she stopped writing. She speaks Gujarati, English, Hindi, and a bit of Marathi. She loves cats and enjoys furniture painting and dancing, and she procrastinates by tending to her plants, when not working. She thanks a recent creative writing workshop, which allowed her to tap into lost creativity after nearly two decades and of course cheesecake! She is excited about this opportunity to do a reading for Book Bytes from her first-ever publication.
Ashleigh Mattern is the author of the young adult fantasy novel Magicked Born. A copywriter and nationally published journalist, she has been working as a professional writer since 2007. She’s the co-owner of Vireo Creative Web Design & Marketing and co-owner of Play Sask Sports, an adult rec sports league based in Saskatoon. In her spare time, you’ll find her writing, reading, riding her bicycle, and playing recreational sports. Read more about Ashleigh at ashleighmattern.com.
