Call for applications for Facilitator for Revision Intensive

EXTENDED DEADLINE to October 17, midnight

The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild invites all those with the necessary qualifications to apply to facilitate a new online course called Revision Intensive.

This is a multi-week online course designed to instruct and support a group of fiction writers as they revise a fiction manuscript before submitting it for publication. The facilitator will give instruction on revision techniques and craft elements in fiction, as well as support these fiction writers through the process of revising their manuscripts by facilitating group discussions.

The Revision Intensive will consist of four 2-hour evening classes over a period of 3 months, held via Zoom, for 6-8 accepted writers. These classes will include:

  • 45-60 minutes of instruction on elements of revision or what fiction writers may need to know about completing their work for publication, as well as
  • 60 minutes of facilitated group discussion to answer questions or concerns about the revision process.

The facilitator will not read the writers’ full manuscripts but may read an excerpt of the work if it helps address a problem or question raised. Participants will be expected to write and revise their own work-in-progress outside of class time.

Class dates are negotiable, but will be tentatively scheduled as 2 evening classes in late November/early December, a break for Christmas and participant writing time, and 2 evening classes in January.

Participants may be writers in any of the following fiction genres: literary, historical, speculative, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, thriller, horror or other fiction subgenres. Fiction must be long-form and may be for an adult or young adult audience. This class is not intended for poetry, nonfiction or academic work, picture or children’s books, or short story collections. This class will not include participants workshopping each others’ writing, writing time during class or the facilitator reading, editing or evaluating full manuscripts, although there may be some reading/critiquing necessary for clarification and discussion purposes.

At the end of this intensive, participating writers will have gained:

  • Increased knowledge about the tools and methods of revision
  • Increased skills and confidence in revising their own fiction manuscript for submission for publication
  • Connections with other SK writers going through the same process for their fiction manuscripts
  • A supportive relationship with an established and knowledgeable fiction writer
  •

The successful facilitator must have:

  • experience as a teacher or workshop leader
  • experience mentoring or coaching writers
  • extensive previous publications (including at least two fiction books) and knowledge of the craft of writing fiction
  • the ability to conduct meetings in Zoom

This position is open to writers anywhere in Canada, although Saskatchewan residency is preferred. Out-of-province applicants must explain their connections to the Saskatchewan writing community in their application.

The successful facilitator will be paid a fee of $2000 plus GST if applicable. The facilitator is expected to be involved in participant selections (participants will submit a letter of interest) in November before the course starts. SWG staff will support the class and manage its online components.

Applications must include:

  • Cover letter outlining:
    • How you meet this position’s qualifications
    • Your proposed topics for the 4 courses
    • Your ideas for supporting 6-8 writers in this multi-week course
  • Literary CV (max 5 pages), including a list of previous publications, teaching and/or workshop experience, and any mentoring or coaching experience.

Please submit your application by email to programs@skwriter.com by midnight Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
