A professional development workshop for queer, trans, and nonbinary writers of all levels in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Join the University of Calgary’s writer-in-residence Leah Horlick for this free, regionally-specific online workshop during Pride Month.

Queer writers at all career stages face systemic risks and barriers in both performance and publishing. And sometimes, related advice from major centers elsewhere isn’t transferable to those of us in prairie cities or rural communities. This workshop will thoughtfully explore some of our options in a regional context. We’ll talk about what “work-life balance” might mean for us, ways to approach engagement with the public, and skills to protect yourself in person and online. Queer and trans writers of all levels who live in what are colonially considered Alberta and Saskatchewan are encouraged to attend. Happy Pride <3

Accessibility information:

This camera-optional workshop will not require small group work or participation in discussion (though the latter is certainly welcome), and will include exercises that can be completed privately afterward. Automatic captions will be available, and a transcript of the workshop content will be provided for participants who would benefit from reading along.

If you’re interested in this topic but can’t attend, or would prefer to explore this issue on your own, you might find some helpful information in Leah’s blog series (listed in reverse chronological order) on related topics here: https://open-book.ca/Writer-in-Residence/Archives/Leah-Horlick
