Great Beginnings, Middles, and Ends: A Workshop on Writing Picture Books for Children
Bev Brenna will discuss key aspects of the picture book (fiction and non-fiction) and share models of beginnings, middles, and ends in published work. Participants are invited to bring original picture book manuscripts into today’s session, with time provided for revision; alternatively, participants will be encouraged to begin something new during the workshop. The session will conclude with an opportunity to share the “essential questions” that our current projects ask. Look forward to hearing about patterns and trends in the field of Canadian picture books, collecting a reading list to support your upcoming work, and connecting with other writers (from emerging to experienced) who are interested in the picture book form.
Beverley Brenna is the author of 14 books for young people and the Children’s Editor at Red Deer Press. Bev’s academic book Contemporary Canadian Picture Books: A Critical Review (Brenna, Dionne & Tavares, 2021) shares findings from her SSHRC Insight Study, and is available in free Open Access from Brill.
