Windscript magazine is the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild’s annual magazine that showcases poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction by Saskatchewan high school students. We are seeking emerging Saskatchewan editors to fill two positions:

 

1. A hybrid role of Managing Editor + Poetry or Prose Editor
2. An Associate Editor who will work in the other genre (either poetry or prose).

 

Please be sure to indicate which genre(s) you’d prefer if applying to the Managing Editor and/or Associate Editor role.

 

Managing Editor

The Managing Editor will:

• Read through all submissions
• Receive overall direction from the Program Manager and maintain regular communication
• Determine which 16 submissions to include in 40 pages of the publication, and discuss a theme or design with the Publications Coordinator
• Work with Prose or Poetry Associate Editor to select work to be included, including notifying successful contributors and unsuccessful submissions, and collecting signed contracts from contributors
• Work with the Associate Editor to ensure contributors complete their edits
• Submit all edited work to the Publication Coordinator by the deadline 
• Coordinate the order of the work in the magazine (Note: the Publications Coordinator will be responsible for laying out and designing the magazine.)
• Write a Managing Editor’s Note
• Assist in the planning of the social media launch in early June with the Program Manager, which includes assisting with the arrangements for readers and recording a short talking head video for the social media launch.
• Proofread the magazine in a timely manner with superior attention to detail, paying special attention to contributors’ names and all other aspects of the magazine.
• Complete all the required duties of Managing Editor, as well as the duties of the Associate Editor in the genre they’re hired in.
• Provide a brief final report of the experience, including a log of total hours worked

 

Associate Editors (either poetry or prose)
The Prose Editor will be responsible for both fiction and nonfiction writing; the Poetry Editor will be responsible for poetry. In their respective genres, the Associate Editors will:

• Read through all submissions
• Work with the Managing Editor on selecting up to 16 poetry and/or prose pieces for the magazine
• Work with contributors to complete the editing of their pieces and bios for publication
• Submit all edited work to the Managing Editor by a predetermined deadline
• Work with the Managing Editor for the layout and order of the work in the magazine
• Select winners and honourable mentions for the magazine awards in their respective genre
• Assist with proofreading the magazine in a timely manner with superior attention to detail, paying special attention to contributors’ names and all other aspects of the magazine.
• Write an Editor’s Note
• Assist in the planning of the social media launch in early June with the Program Manager, which may include assisting with the arrangements for readers and recording a short talking head video for the social media launch.
• Provide a brief final report of the experience, including a log of total hours worked

 

The Managing + Poetry or Prose Editor will be paid $1800 (plus GST if applicable) for their work, and the Associate Editor will be paid $1200 (plus GST if applicable). The work will be completed between November 30, 2026 – June 30, 2027, with the bulk of work occurring January-March. Previous Editors have submitted time logs for the last three years. The Managing + Poetry or Prose Editor worked an average of 78 hours total throughout their term. The Associate Editor worked an average of 46 hours total throughout their term. Please note that this is a guide – you may work slower or faster than previous editors.

 

Editors should expect to work collaboratively. Experience with Google Drive (including Google Docs and Google Sheets), Gmail, Zoom, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word is an asset, along with superior attention to detail.

 

Our ideal candidates have experience with the publication process through their own publications, have a solid grasp of editing through training and experience, and can demonstrate paid or volunteer experience working with young writers.

Editors must reside in Saskatchewan.

 

Preference will be given to emerging editors who have not served in the Windscript Managing Editor position in the last year.

 

As the SWG values human expression and creativity, we only accept human-generated work that is not written, developed, or assisted by Generative AI tools, to protect authors, literacy, critical thinking, ethical practices, new ideas, education, professional development and craft, community and against misinformation. We expect Editors to perform their duties for Windscript Vol 43 without the use of Generative AI, including no Generative AI usage in their application packages.

  • your full contact and mailing information,
  • explaining which position(s) you are interested in and why,
  • your editing style and experience,
  • your paid or volunteer experience working with young writers,
  • identity self-declaration* (see below)
• your literary CV (max 5 pages), which should include information on the following:
  • education
  • publications
  • professional development relevant to creative writing and/or editing
  • editing and teaching experience
  • experience as a mentor or mentee
  • experience offering writing critique (through manuscript evaluations or similar)
  • memberships and involvement in the literary community
  • experience working with young writers
• Please do not submit additional material (such as editing examples, writing samples, reference letters, etc.) These will not be forwarded to the hiring committee.

*To help the SWG support writers of diverse communities and identities, we encourage applicants to self-declare if they identify as a writer who is a member of group(s) experiencing marginalization and underrepresentation. (i.e. Black, Indigenous, or Person of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, or Disability). This self-declaration will be used internally by the hiring committee and will not be publicized.
