Sketching the Past: An Introduction To Personal Essay Writing

Join other writers at a free one-hour workshop hosted by the USask library and led by a current MFA student.

In this workshop, we’ll explore how the stories we tell about (and to) ourselves shape our understanding of the world around us. We’ll start with a brief introduction to personal essay as a genre and examine key craft concepts. Then, through guided writing exercises,  participants will explore memory and identity as starting points for their own pieces. Open to writers of all experience levels and welcoming all lived experiences, this workshop offers a great opportunity to experiment with the form and get your own personal essay started!

This workshop will be led by Nico Neufeld. Nico (they/them) is a writer and MFA student in Creative Writing at the University of Saskatchewan. An honours graduate of The New School in NYC, their work spans genres and explores gendered trauma and the otherworldly. They founded and facilitate Nearly Dead Poets Society, a remote writing workshop series for and by writers with PTSD.

Creative writing programming at the USask Library is open to everyone, and refreshments will be provided.
