Call for Weaving Words Facilitator

The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is seeking applications for a workshop facilitator for our workshop series Weaving Words with our partner, the Global Gathering Place. Weaving Words will take place at the Global Gathering Place, 100 5th Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK.

Weaving Words is a creative writing workshop series for Newcomers to Canada living in Saskatoon that culminates in a reading celebration and participant’s stories published on the Global Gathering Place’s and SWG’s websites. In 2025, the facilitator will offer two separate in-person series of 4 creative writing workshops (see below for schedule breakdown) that guides participants in-class through the creation and editing of poetry and/or prose pieces to be shared in the reading celebration and/or published on GGP’s and SWG’s websites.

Workshop participants are Permanent Residents with CLB level 4 or higher, and are often beginning or emerging writers seeking skill development and community connection. We estimate approximately 12 participants for each series.

We are planning for in-person workshops. The 2025 summer schedule is:

  • Tuesday, August 5, 6:00-9:00 p.m., workshop
  • Thursday, August 7, 6:00-9:00 p.m., workshop
  • Tuesday, August 12, 6:00-9:00 p.m., workshop
  • Thursday, August 14, 6:00-7:00 p.m., workshop, 7:15-9:00 p.m. reading celebration

The winter schedule is to be determined, but will likely occur on Saturday/Sunday afternoons.

The workshop facilitator will be paid $1500 (plus GST if applicable) per series for two series. The work will be completed between July 2025 and March 2026. The facilitator must have the ability to commit time to this project, including 10 hours of workshop instruction + 2 hours for the reading celebration that they will attend and host in its entirety. The facilitator will be in regular communication with the SWG and GGP during their term, and is expected to submit a final report to the SWG upon completion. There is a possibility of extension for additional series after April 2026, pending grant funding approval.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Cross-cultural experience is an asset (though not necessarily from working with Newcomer populations, please explain your experience in your cover letter.)
  • experience as a teacher, workshop leader, mentor, writer-in-residence, and/or as an editor,
  • the ability to work with beginning and emerging writers, along with knowledge of the craft of writing in all genres, and the ability to help participants self-edit their writing in class
  • Saskatoon area residency preferred (mileage is not covered.)

Applications must include:

  • Cover letter outlining your ability to meet the position’s requirements including how you may have gained cross cultural experience,
  • Literary CV (max 5 pages), including a list of previous publications and projects, a summary of teaching, mentoring, editing, and/or workshop experience,
  • Your biography (100 words max),
  • To help the SWG support writers of diverse communities and identities, we encourage applicants to self-declare if they identify as a writer who is a member of group(s) experiencing marginalization and underrepresentation. (i.e. Black, Indigenous, or Person of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, or Disability).

Please submit your application by email to swgevents@skwriter.com by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025.
