Indigenous Storytelling Month - The Making of First Nations University

We welcome you to join us in our first week of storytelling adventures! The SWG brings Dr. Blair Stonechild who will share his story about the First Nations University of Canada (formerly Saskatchewan Indian Federated College), this is a special institution with a unique history and challenges. Dr. Stonechild was the first faculty member hired in 1976 He will talk about how the university developed its programs and found its niche within post-secondary education in Canada.

Blair Stonechild is a member of the Muscowpetung First Nation and a Residential School survivor. His degrees are from McGill University and the University of Regina. In 1976, Blair has also been Dean of Academics and Executive Director of Development. Publications include Loyal Till Death; The New Buffalo; Buffy Sainte-Marie; The Knowledge Seeker; Loss of Indigenous Eden; and Challenge to Civilization. Blair is married to Sylvia and has three adult children.

Julianna McLean is a nehiyaw Hungarian writer from James Smith Cree Nation.

With the support of the Arts and Science Indigenous Masters Students Scholarships, Julianna obtained her MFA in writing from the University of Saskatchewan; she also has a background in Indigenous Education and Kinesiology. Julianna’s MFA thesis is a compilation of short stories and poetry that focus on her grandparents and mother’s residential / day school experiences, and Julianna’s intergenerational survivor story. Julianna has poetry published in the anthology Where I’m from 2014
