Deidre Havrelock

Deidre Havrelock is an award-winning children’s author and a screenwriter. She is a member of Saddle Lake Cree Nation, but was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Her debut picture book Buffalo Wild! was released September 7, 2021 by Annick Press. Other titles include Indigenous Ingenuity: A Celebration of Traditional North American Knowledge, co-authored with Edward Kay (Christy Ottaviano Books/Little, Brown); Why We Dance: A Story of Hope and Healing (Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2024); The Heartbeat Drum: The Story of Carol Powder Cree Drummer and Activist (Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2024). Upcoming titles include: Buffalo: The Enduring Story of Buffalo and the First Peoples of North America; Nellie Carlson: Elder and Activist, and Bison Belong: How Bison Helped Engineer the Great Plains. Deidre is a contributing author to the anthology You Were Made for This World: Celebrated Indigenous Voices Speak to Young People, 2025.
