The SWG is pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Awards in Nonfiction:
First place: Judith Wright for How We Want to be Remembered
Judith Wright is a Saskatoon writer whose non-fiction stories appear in Prairies North Magazine, The Gardener, Western Producer and Harrowsmith. Her fiction first appeared in the 1980s in Grain Magazine, and her novel, The Magpie Summer (Polestar) was published in 1992. In 2017, she self-published a non-fiction book, Dog-wise; What We Learn From Dogs. She is interested in ordinary wisdom—how insight from everyday experience informs the way the wider world is viewed. Judith has been a public health epidemiologist for more than 15 years.
Second place: Michael Trussler for The Sunday Book
Michael Trussler has published poetry, short stories, literary criticism and creative non-fiction. His short story collection Encounters won the City of Regina and Book of the Year SBA in 2006. He has had poetry recently published with The Alfred Gustav Press. He teaches English at the University of Regina.
Third place: Jennifer S Wallace for Miss G and Me: A Daughter’s Memoir
Jennifer S. Wallace wrote a self-published non-fiction children's book: When He Opened His Eyes: Gordon’s Story about her firstborn in 2009. She writes articles and poems for Sister Triangle, a women's magazine. Miss G and Me: a daughter's memoir, is based on her relationship with her mom. Jennifer was born and raised in Saskatoon, Treaty Six Territory. She still lives there with the loves of her life, John, Imogen, Isaac and their two dogs. She loves teaching kindergarten and judo, singing, painting, buying too many children’s books, reading, and dreaming about playing her guitar.
The three—who receive awards of $1,000, $650, and $350, respectively—were selected by judges Don Gillmor and Alexandra Shimo.

The awards will be officially presented at the John V. Hicks Awards, which will be held as a small invitation-only event on Thursday, October 22, 2020, during the SWG’s Fall Conference at the YQR Local Market in Regina.
