First Draft: Conversations on Writing with Candace Savage and Dianne Young

Note: A captioned video will be uploaded to YouTube following the event.

First Draft: Conversations on Writing is an online talk series that dives into themes that affect our writing lives. Writing helps us to understand things and to communicate these findings to our audience, even if our audience is ourselves. Sometimes we are driven by these themes, other times they’re the things that hold us back – what we learn through the process can be revolutionary. The quest to be understood unifies all writers.

This event features a 15-minute talk presented by Candace Savage around the theme of grief. Following the talk is an interview conversation to dig deeper into the theme, hosted and moderated by Dianne Young.

Speaking of Grief

Do not search for grief. Grief will come searching for you. Whatever you love can be snatched from your hands: person, place or thing. New grief may leave you speechless, at a loss for words. But the knowledge of grief, in memory or anticipation, holds heat like a bed of glowing coals. With time, it throws its strange light over our lives and the lives of others, helping us see, fueling fierce hopes and giving us the courage to speak.

In this brief conversation, Candace Savage and Dianne Young will reflect on the importance and the difficulty of admitting grief and loss into our writing.

Candace Savage is the author of more than two dozen books for children and adults, including Hello, Crow!, Prairie: a Natural History, A Geography of Blood and Strangers in the House. She lives in Saskatoon and, occasionally, in Eastend, Saskatchewan. More information: www.candacesavage.ca
