Maureen Ulrich

Maureen was born in Saskatoon, but grew up in Edmonton and Calgary. She returned to Saskatchewan in 1976 to attend university in her birthplace, and has essentially never left! In Lampman, her home since 1980, sports are religion, and Maureen can usually be found worshiping at rinks or ball diamonds throughout the province. Maureen's first novel Power Plays (Coteau Books) won the Independent Publishers' Moonbeam Award and was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards in 2009. It was nominated for the Snow Willow and Stellar (BC Young Readers' Choice) Awards in 2010. Face Off was released in September 2010. It was a silver medalist in the Moonbeam Young Adult: Mature Issues category. Breakaway, the third book in the Jessie Mac hockey trilogy, was released in August 2012. Wood Dragon Books relaunched the #jessiemachockeyseries in 2020.

Workshops Offered

Gained in Translation
Group Size: 6-30
Year: 0
Participants learn how to translate their real-life experiences into fiction, as I did with Power Plays. Attention will first be given to creating a “real” character, and then placing this character in a “real” setting.
The Key to the Character
Group Size: 6-30
Year: 0
In this writing workshop, I use samples from my plays to discuss methods of characterization available to the playwright. Participants will develop two characters of their own and write a short scene, using these characters.
Writing Setting or Character Description
Group Size: 6-30
Year: 0
In this workshop, students are led step-by-step through the writing process. A graphic organizer and exemplar are used to develop a descriptive paragraph of either a character or setting. Self and peer revision and editing are also explored.
