The structured chaos of a kaleidoscope is a soothing beauty and Portico’s favourite word. She writes to puzzle and play. Infinite structures of language craft the images for characters who have unpredictable and transformative lives.
For the past twenty years Portico’s home was in a collage of places. She worked in Kansas as an art professor, art writer, and gallery director. Her love life was in San Diego, California and for ten years she taught at the Hawai'i Prepartory Academy in the summers. It was an exotic time.
Portico's father, extended family, writing community, and many friends are in Canada. Portico has completed her work at the university. She now lives in Prairie Village, Kansas with Tom and their cat Florence. Portico’s favourite art supply is glitter.
Her first novel, Cashmere Comes From Goats, was published with Stonehouse Publishing in May 2022.
Portico has received a Professional Development, and a Research and Creation Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for her second book, Would You Give Up Arms For Wings? A story inspired by the visionary life and writings of Paulus Berensohn. After a month at Studio Kura in Itoshima City, Japan in September 2023 this book is almost finished. It's been a beautiful and challenging project.
In small, or large groups, I can teach you how to make a hand-made journal using the ancient coptic stitch style. This process takes a couple of hours. A great setting would be young and old, and in-between helping each other.
It's exciting to make your own paper for your own journal.
A workshop designed to develop strategies for working from the first draft to the final project, with an eye to a structure that keeps the book or story moving at a pace that is satisfying for the reader.
