Yvonne wrote her first novel in a 32-page Hilroy notebook in Grade 4. She amended the pale green cover by crossing out the heading "Name/Nom" and replacing it with "Author." The story was weak. It was 32-pages of exclamation marks and attitude. (Duh?! She was 10!!!) But Yvonne was a writer, and she was proud enough to carry the now discoloured, food-soiled notebook with her as she moved from Uranium City, Saskatchewan, to Mackenzie, BC, and to her current home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Now that says something, don’t you think?
Yvonne recently retired from a career in education where she worked as a teacher, teacher-librarian, and school principal, to begin a new chapter as a writer. She has completed three manuscripts that she hopes to someday publish: a picture book, middle grade novel, and young adult novel. She loves writing for children because kids make the best story characters. They make every day fun and yes, sometimes unusual.
One of her favourite quotes came from a kindergartner on a bitter cold day during an indoor recess: “Mme Denomy, how can you live with all this chaos?”
The answer is easy. She goes home and writes about it!
