Call for Writer-in-Residence 2022 Facilitated Retreat

The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is seeking a Writer-In-Residence (WIR) for our November Facilitated Retreat at St. Peter’s Abbey from November 10-13, 2022. The Facilitated Retreat is open to beginner or emerging writers in any genre, and is intended to include both silent writing time and interaction with the WIR.

The WIR will give a 60-min talk about the craft of writing, intended for writers of all genres, on the first evening of the facilitated retreat. The WIR will also meet one-on-one with each participant for a total of one hour to give specific feedback on their submitted writing and/or answers to their writing-related questions. The WIR can choose to hold 1 60-minute meeting or 2 30-minute meetings with each retreatant. The WIR will be available for informal discussion with participants during meals and will host a reading of the participants’ work on the last evening. The object of the Facilitated Retreat is to encourage and offer advice to participants.

The WIR will be paid a flat fee of $1500, plus GST if applicable, for working with 10 retreat participants. If participant numbers are fewer, a lesser fee will be paid. A private room with washroom and meals are provided. The WIR is responsible for their own transportation to and from the facility, although carpooling may be available. A travel subsidy may be paid. A complete job description is available upon request. Previous WIR should allow five years before re-applying for this position.

Expectations:

  • To hold a 60-minute talk in the evening of Thursday Nov 10 about the craft of writing for an audience of emerging writers in all genres.
  • To review and edit materials supplied by retreatants in their application; to discuss this work and interact with participants in one-hour meetings during the retreat.
  • To provide an introductory email to participants to welcome them to the retreat prior to arrival.
  • To host an open mic, in which all participants share their work, in the evening of Saturday Nov 12
  • To submit a final report to the SWG about the Facilitated Retreat by Nov 18

Qualifications:

  • Experience in a teaching or mentoring situation with beginning writers in different genres
  • An extensive publication history, including at least two books
  • Saskatchewan residency preferred. Out of province applicants must explain their connections to the Saskatchewan writing community in their application.

Apply:

To apply, please submit via email to Yolanda Hansen at programs@skwriter.com your literary CV (max 5 pages) and a letter describing your approach to teaching/mentoring writers and the names and phone numbers of two people familiar with your teaching/mentoring ability. A demonstrated ability to work with writers of different genres is an asset.
