Summer Reading Series - Book Bytes 2021 – Call for Readers and Hosts

Book Bytes is a lunchtime, online summer reading series celebrating the work of Saskatchewan authors of diverse genres, identities, and experience levels through 15-minute bite-sized readings.

Six themed events are offered. Events run from 12:00-1:00 p.m.-SK time and include three readers per event. Work does not need to be published to be presented.

  • July 7 – Children’s Lit (~12 and younger)
  • July 14 – Nonfiction
  • July 21 – Poetry (including spoken word)
  • July 28 – Fiction
  • August 4 – Playwriting/screenwriting
  • August 11 – Young Adult literature (13+)

Please note: events will be broadcast via Zoom webinar and will be uploaded to YouTube through a private link following the event. These videos will not be posted publicly or live-streamed to Facebook, but registered participants and presenters will receive the video link.

Application process

Writers who work within these genres and are available to attend live (via Zoom) are encouraged to apply by May 17 at 4:30 p.m. by sharing a paragraph indicating:

  • if you are an author/performer who is a beginner (unpublished, unpaid performance(s)), emerging (some publications with up to one book, some paid performances), or established (extensive publications with at least two books, several paid performances.) The SWG will be looking for readers of all stages;
  • the genre you are applying for and any context you’d like to provide in regards to your work within that genre
  • if you are a Saskatchewan resident, and
  • the date you are applying for.

To help the SWG support writers of diverse communities and identities, we encourage applicants to self-declare if they identify as a writer of a marginalized community (i.e. Black, Indigenous or Person of Colour, 2SLGBTQ+, or Disability).

Please send applications to Tea Gerbeza, Program Assistant, at programassistant@skwriter.com

Selection process

Book Bytes will showcase the diverse talents of Saskatchewan writers. The SWG will select readers based on the diversity of experience, identity and genre. Selected readers will be paid $100 per reading.

Hosts wanted

We are seeking event hosts! No experience required. You do not need to write in the genre to host the event. Simply send an email if you would like to host along with the date(s) you are available. Selected hosts are paid $50 per event. Priority is given to people based in SK.

Hosts will be provided speaking notes and will introduce themselves, the event, and the readers while keeping the event on time. All technical aspects of the event will be handled by the SWG.

The application deadline is May 17, 2021, at 4:30 p.m.
