Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Edmonton, Derryl Murphy moved to Saskatoon in 2008 after stops in British Columbia and Utah. While primarily known for science fiction and fantasy he is hard at work on a non-fiction historical biography about his grandfather, growing out of years tweeting his diaries as @TrapperBud. His Aurora Award-nominated first novel, the math-as-magic urban fantasy Napier's Bones, is due to be reprinted by Edmonton's NeWest Press. A piece of short fiction from 2024, "Mars Needs Psychopaths," has just been reprinted in The Year's Best Canadian Fantasy and Science Fiction Volume 3. Derryl has been nominated two other times for the Aurora Award, and shortlisted once for the Sunburst Award.
In addition to his writing, Derryl was once a fiction editor with On Spec magazine, and also the magazine's Art Director. He was at one time the president of SF Canada, and before that was two time Canadian Regional Director for SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He was also a professional photographer for many years, including time as a photojournalist, working with a stock agency, and doing commercial work.
