Decolonizing Worldbuilding in Fantasy and Video Games

 

For this last week of February, 2023, we welcome you to join these 2 wonderful ladies, host, Heather O’Watch and presenter, Tonia Laird. Tonia will be using examples of published media and her own past and contemporary work. Tonia shares the movement to bring non-colonial knowledge and societies into modern works of fantasy and video games.

Presenter

 

Tonia Laird is a Métis writer and artist living in Treaty 6 territory. She has published multiple short stories and comics and currently works as a Writer/Worldbuilder for the AAA video game company, Thought Pennies Entertainment. Tonia writing credits also include working for the game company BioWare on Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Host

 

Heather is a Nakota and Cree woman from the Okanese First Nation located in Treaty 4 Territory. She is a graduate student and works in the philanthropic sector. Her passion for being a storyteller started at an early age with writing. Heather enjoys sharing, creating, and honouring stories of her own experiences around culture, identity and body positivity. An SWGIP alumni, Heather’s upcoming children’s book Auntie’s Rez Surprise is set to be released in 2023.
